Because wood that's been on the ground for a while can soak up moisture, and moisture is the enemy. You want wood that snaps cleanly when you break it—that's a sign it's dry. If it bends and thuds, it's damp, and it won't work. For the spindle, you want a straight piece about the thickness of your thumb, and for the fireboard, a flat piece about the size of your hand. Both should be from the same softwood if possible, because they need to be similar in density to create the right friction.

Step 2: Prepare Your Spindle and Fireboard

Now that you have your wood, you need to shape it. The spindle should be about 8-10 inches long, and you want to carve it so it's roughly pencil-thick in the middle, with slightly tapered ends. One end goes into the fireboard, the other into the handhold. The fireboard should be flat on one side, and you'll carve a small depression near the edge, then cut a V-shaped notch from that depression to the edge of the board. This notch is where the ember will form. The handhold, also called a bearing block, should be made of a harder wood like oak or even a stone with a depression, and you should lubricate it with something like a bit of fat or soap to reduce friction on the top of the spindle. Keep a steady rhythm, and after a few dozen strokes, you should see a pile of dark brown dust forming in the notch. That dust is what will become your ember. Once you have a good pile, increase your speed and pressure for a final burst. You'll know you're there when the dust starts to smoke even when you stop. Carefully lift the spindle away, and you should see a glowing ember in the dust. Gently blow on it to encourage it to glow red, then transfer it to your tinder bundle.

What Can Go Wrong and How to Fix It

Here's the warning: the most common failure is using wood that's too hard or too damp. If you're not getting smoke after a minute, stop and check your wood. Is it dry? Is it soft? If you're using a piece of pine that has a lot of resin, that can also be a problem because it can glaze the fireboard. Another issue is not having a deep enough notch, or the spindle slipping out of the depression. Make sure your depression is deep enough to hold the spindle, and that the notch is wide enough for the dust to escape. Also, if your handhold is not lubricated, the top of the spindle will heat up and you'll lose speed. Finally, don't press too hard—you want to generate friction, not crush the wood. If you're still struggling, try a different piece of wood. The difference between success and failure is often just a matter of finding the right soft, dry, dead wood.
