It's dying because your fuel is wet. I've watched too many people sweat over a perfect spindle while feeding their ember into a nest of damp grass and then wondering why it fizzles. The fire triangle isn't a suggestion—it's a law. And you're violating it.
The Ember Is Not the Fire
We treat the bow drill ember like it's the finish line. It's not. It's the starting gun. The ember is just a lump of smoldering wood—a low-temperature heat source that needs to ignite something else. The fire triangle demands heat, fuel, and oxygen. Your ember is the heat. Your tinder is the fuel. And if that fuel is even slightly damp, you're asking a 3,000°F spark to do the work of a blowtorch. Wait—that's ferro rod territory. For a bow drill, the ember is far cooler, more like a glowing coal that needs perfect conditions to leap into flame.

But when was the last time you checked the moisture content of your tinder? Not the snap test—that's for sticks. Tinder is too thin to snap. It's either dry or it's not. Dry Fuel Trumps Technique
I've seen a sloppy bow drill with dry cedar produce a flame in seconds, while a perfect form with a damp spindle and wet tinder fails every time. The Fire Lay Is Your Friend
Once you've got your ember and your tinder catches, don't blow it by piling on the wrong fuel. But for a bow drill, I want a teepee—it directs heat upward and gives the flame oxygen. And I add kindling slowly, pencil-thin sticks, then finger-thick, then wrist-thick. Here's a concrete example: last winter, I was out in the woods and my first two attempts failed because I used a fireboard that had been rained on the night before. The third attempt, I found a dead cedar branch, split it, and used the dry inner wood as a fireboard and spindle. The ember caught, I fed it into a nest of dry grass I'd kept in my jacket, and I had a flame in under a minute. Same technique, same hands. The difference was dry fuel.
What I'd Actually Do
Stop obsessing over the perfect spindle dust. Before you even start your bow drill, spend ten minutes gathering the driest tinder, kindling, and fuel you can find. Use the snap test on every stick. Check that your tinder is hair-thin and crisp. And when you get that ember, don't rush it—feed it slowly, blow gently, and give it a chance. If it fails, don't tweak your technique first. Check your fuel. I guarantee that's where the problem is.
