Why the Bow Drill Beats Your Ferro Rod
You've been lied to. The 3,000°F spark from your ferro rod isn't the ultimate fire-starting tool—it's a crutch. In damp conditions, a spark that hot can still fail if your tinder isn't perfect. The bow drill, on the other hand, produces a smoldering ember that you can nurture into flame even when everything feels wet. Step 1: Gather the Right Wood

What Can Go Wrong and How to Fix It
The most common mistake is rushing. If your ember dies, it’s usually because your wood was too damp or your spindle was too short. Check your wood: it should be bone dry. If you’re in a wet environment, split open a dead branch to find the dry inner wood. Also, make sure your bow is strung tight enough—if it slips, you’ll lose all momentum.
Another issue is the handhold getting too hot. Lubricate it with a bit of spit or oil to keep it cool. And don’t press down too hard—you’ll crush the spindle. Let the bow do the work.
